Spirit of Poverty

Listen as these audio sermons on poverty offer some spiritual direction. As demands grow tougher and prices skyrocket, keeping our eyes on the Lord will give us the wisdom needed to live a balanced life.

Psalm 37:4 Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

The costs of living, in this modern age, are only equaled by the rise in demands. Everyone wants to own and live in a nice home and drive a nice car. But what does the bible say about the “keeping up” culture that is so pervasive in this earthly realm?

Deuteronomy 8:18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

God wants us to be successful and productive.

The Beggar Lazarus

One of the least discussed parables of Jesus in a day and age of “prosperity gospel” is the tale of a rich man and a poor beggar. You can use the stark mental image of a poor man sitting outside the city gates. He was covered in sores and begging for scraps of food to eat. Can you see the contrast with the rich man in fine linens, paying little heed to anything beyond his own needs?

Audio sermons on poverty take a look at poverty not only in the natural but the spiritual. The book of Luke goes on to express that when both men died, Abraham met the poor Lazarus with a King’s welcome.

Luke 16:22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side.

The rich man looked on and called for a drop of water to quench his thirst in hell. Abraham informed the man he had already received his riches on earth.

Luke 16:25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish.

Understand that is was not because the man was rich as the reason for not going to heaven. It was because he was selfish, proud and showed no mercy to the poor man, Lazarus. Scripture tells us that we are to do unto others and we would want them to do unto us.

Luke 6:31  Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Joseph’s Life of Poverty

The sale of the son of Jacob, Joseph, into the bondage of Egyptian slavery by his own brothers seems cruel. This biblical account given in audio sermons on poverty demonstrates the difference faith makes. In particular when it comes to sustaining the true believer. Not only did Joseph fair well, but was second in command under the Pharaoh. As famine struck the land, Joseph had helped divert disaster by interpreting the dream of an Egyptian king. It was a dream given by God that unveiled the coming of hard times. The strong connection to, and faith in, God allowed Joseph’s life to thrive and be reconnected to his family. He was able to provide sustenance to his family by sharing in the sustaining power of God.

The Holy Bible cautions us to concentrate our efforts on doing the work we are called to do. We are to pursue being in the service of the Lord rather than chasing earthly pursuits and monetary goals. Instead of trying to fill earthly bank accounts, build a store of riches in heaven. Your heavenly account increases with every act of mercy and kindness extended to others.

Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Rich In Christ Jesus

God promises to take care of our needs if we are faithful. There is no poverty in the presence of our Lord. He blessed us tremendously through healing in our body and creative miracles.
