Christian Gospel

It has been said that there is no business like show business. More importantly, there is no business like God’s business. There’s no music like gospel music or Christian gospel. Learn some amazing facts about Christian gospel.

What is Christian gospel? Christian gospel has a twofold meaning. First, it refers to the written accounts of Jesus life in the Four Gospels. On the other hand, it refers to music written by those who want to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

How has gospel music changed through the years and throughout the nations?

Song of Praise

Psalms or hymns were the Christian gospel songs for Temple worship in the Old and the New Testament. The term “hymn” comes from the Greek term “Hymnos”. It means “song of praise”. Tehillim is Hebrew for Psalms. It means “praises.” The Greek term for Psalms is “psalmoi.” It means “instrumental music.” David was the world’s greatest Christian Gospel artist. His Christian gospel songs are still being used today. He wrote hymns to His God of gods. Greeks, Egyptians and those in other cultures also wrote hymns to their gods.

Jesus sang Christian gospel music to His Father, God. In Matthew Chapter 26 verse 30 Jesus sang with His disciples at the Last Supper.

“And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the Mount Olives.”

Some researchers believe it was Psalm 118 a Jewish prayer of praise and thanksgiving. Psalms 118:1 states “O Give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good: because His mercy endureth forever.”

Centuries later traditional religious hymns became the new genre of Christian gospel songs.
The Reformation and other movements affected Church music. New hymn themes were the result of new religious doctrines and practices. Martin Luther, a German Christian gospel artist, wrote “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.” It is called the “Battle Hymn of the Reformation.” It paraphrases Psalms 46. Martin Luther used the “95 theses” to challenge the Roman Catholic Church. It’s split led to Lutheranism.

Encourage Others

Christian gospel includes writing about personal challenges to encourage others. In Colossians 3:16 of the New Living Translation Paul concludes “….Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.” An Irish Christian gospel song artist, Joseph M. Scriven, wrote a famous American, Christian gospel hymn. His life story included the death of two future brides. His first bride-to-be died in an accident. His next fiance’ became ill. She died right before the wedding. Shortly after her death, his mother became sick. He was unable to visit her. He wrote her a poem entitled “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” After his life’s journey, it was set to music by Charles C. Converse. “I Am a Friend of God” by Israel Houghton. This can be considered a contemporary version of the song.

Christian gospel songs include the life and mission of Jesus Christ. For example, “Mary Did You Know?” was written and recorded by Christian songwriters and singers Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene. It was also recorded by other Christian gospel artists. This beautiful song travels the world. It shares Jesus’ earthly mission. It mentions Jesus’ Mother Mary, Jesus birth and Jesus ministry. Jesus Death, and Jesus’ Second Coming are also mentioned.

Message of Jesus

Today, computer technology has caused a “Christian gospel,” music genre explosion. Unbelievable styles, rhythms, tempos and state-of-the-art musical instruments as well as songwriting equipment have been developed. Today, Christian gospel artists, such as Southern gospel quartet groups, still sing psalms and hymns. However, there are different tunes and beats. More importantly, the message of Jesus remains.
